During the mid to late 90s, Adam and Josh would get up early on Saturday mornings to watch a program called Saturday Anime on the Sci-fi Channel, which showed various anime films.

One of these films was Robot Carnival, a collection of shorts directed by various people, revolving around robots in various incarnations. In a short named "Deprive", a robot is tasked with saving a little girl from her alien kidnapper. Upon entering the kidnapper's chamber, the viewer is treated to a quick glimpse of the alien smugly sitting on his throne before the camera quickly pans up to the girl, who is suspended above him.

Because the alien's introduction is so brief, Adam and Josh found him to be the most interesting thing about the short. When getting a better look at him, Adam and Josh were amused by his voluminous and flamboyantly yellow hair. Focusing on this aspect of his appearance and nothing else, Adam and Josh dubbed him "The Banana Freak" and over time has become a favorite incidental character in any medium.
