The neighborhood in which Adam and Josh grew up was rife with sweetgum trees, which produced massive amounts of seed pods which were hard and spiky. They were enough of a bane when walking, but particularly dangerous when riding bikes.

One evening while Adam and his dad were riding bikes, they went through a patch of seed pods, and Adam lost his balance, falling directly into a pile of them. Neither Adam nor Josh were fond of the pods before, but the swath of indentations they left on Adam's skin (which they referred to as "perforation") cemented and enhanced their dislike of them.

Even before this incident, Adam and Josh referred to these seed pods as "tapiocas" for no reason other than that they were unaware of the real name but needed something to call them.
