Adam and Josh watched many cartoons in their youth, particularly Warner Brothers cartoons. Due to the time period in which many of them were made, antagonists often included German soldiers. Adam and Josh took particular note of their helmets which were rounded with a point at the top. This amused them to no end, seeing no practical use for the design. They began to refer to this helmet as a "dummkopf hat", due to its German origin, though where they picked up the term "dummkopf" is unknown. Like many of their arbitrary renamings, it has persisted to this day.
The actual helmet is called a "pickelhaube" or "pickelhelm", essentially meaning "pointed helmet", worn in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries by German military, firefighters, and police.
