The Hippy Flute doesn't differ from a regular flute in any way except the register in which it is played. A flute becomes a Hippy Flute when it is played in the low register as opposed to the higher registers, which is more common.
The term was first coined by Adam in reference to the flute part in the song "Going Up the Country" by Canned Heat. Adam is known to strongly dislike this song and any other usage of the Hippy Flute. In reference to "Going Up the Country", Adam is often heard to say "God damned mush-mouth hippies..."
