Back when the Gillette Mach III Razor was first being introduced, they ran a commercial wherein a man flew a jet at increasing speeds until an explosion left him standing seemingly unclothed in a black void. Appearing completely unaffected by his situation, the man immediately began to shave his stubble using the new Mach III. In some variations of the commercial, there was a silhouette of a woman standing behind him. Adam and Josh were quite mystified as to how the man's predicament related to shaving and determined his current state as being "naked in oblivion".

Around Christmastime, a Christmas themed version of the commercial aired with a segmented rendition of Jingle Bells playing between three separate explosions, the third of which rendered the man naked in oblivion. Amused by the new version, Adam and Josh would sing along with the Jingle Bells tones and after the third explosion would cheer "Naked in oblivion!", cementing the phrase's longevity.

Infrequently, the term is used to describe someone who is out of sorts or out of touch with something.
