In the late 90s, Adam and Josh began watching the anime Sailor Moon on television. Being somewhat new to the internet, they spent most of their allotted weekly time looking at and saving Sailor Moon pictures. In one of their searches, they happened upon a picture of the character Melvin. Adam and Josh noted that the name of the image file was GURIOS~1.JPG. (Such cryptic file names were common in the era, as Windows 3.1 only allowed eight characters in a file name.)
Not knowing that Melvin's Japanese name was Gurio Umino, they did not understand the significance of the file name. Instead, seizing on the fact that GURIOS so closely resembled the word "gross", and that both of them considered the character gross, they began to use "gurios" in place of the word "gross" when describing disgusting things. They still use this term to this day.
Use of the tilde
In colloquial internet language, the tilda is often used as a marker to either extend pronunciation of the end of the word, or to indicate special emphasis. For example, one might type "Sailor Moon~~~" to illustrate affection or swooning for Sailor Moon. Adam and Josh retained the tilde from the file name in order to add emphasis to their digust.
